Borobudur is a magnificent 9th-century Buddhist temple located in Central Java, Indonesia. Constructed during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty, it is the world’s largest Buddhist monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple is renowned for its intricate architecture, featuring a pyramid-like structure with multiple tiers and over 2,600 relief panels that depict the life of Buddha and various Jataka tales.
The design of Borobudur symbolizes the Buddhist cosmology, with the base representing the world of desire, the middle levels symbolizing the world of forms, and the top representing the formless realm. The temple is adorned with 504 Buddha statues, many of which are housed in stupas. Borobudur was abandoned in the 14th century due to volcanic eruptions and the spread of Islam in the region, but it was rediscovered in the 19th century and has since become a major pilgrimage site and tourist attraction. The temple’s annual Waisak festival draws thousands of visitors who come to celebrate the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha.
